Hello other Disney fam. My name is Chris. And I’m Kelly. Welcome to the podcast, where

Kelli 0:37
we are starting our best of summer series. So in this series, we’re going to be going through our 10 most popular episodes since the beginning of the podcast. We’re going on three years now when you believe we’re in season seven. Unbelievable. I know. So our 10th most popular episode was originally released on July the seventh of 2022. This is from season five. And in this particular episode, I talked about the new menu coming to the Sci Fi diner, maybe not a new menu anymore, but it was right at the time. And you talk about default drives that you want to

Chris 1:14
come back up for rides that are no longer at Disney World that I wish would come back. Yeah. So we hope you all enjoy it. Absolutely.

Kelli 1:23
So shocking to everyone. But the Sci Fi dine in theater has released a new menu.

Chris 1:30
It made you very very nervous, though, whenever. Remember, I told you that this week?

Kelli 1:36
Well, so here’s the thing it is I mean, it’s kind of a big deal that they released a new menu. What I’m going to say is they’ve released some new menu items. Now you’ve done a phenomenal job talking us through the Sci Fi dine in theater on here, like you told us what the role movies are. You talked about what comes out of the kitchen, all that kind of stuff. So I know we’ve talked about their menu before. So I’m going to tell you the new stuff. And then we’ll talk about some of the favorites. But I’m gonna spend most of the time on the new items. Yeah, sure. So this menu was released or their menu was updated in in June, it was just this month, just a few days ago. So as far as appetizers are concerned, and by the way, if you haven’t been to sci fi dine in, it’s easily one of our favorites. I would put it in our top three, probably. Yeah. And so we’ve done several episodes on it, we absolutely adore sci fi dine in. So they’ve got two new or two. They’re two standard appetizers are still on the menu. They have crispy onion rings with the horseradish dipping sauce for $11 a big deal. And the fried dill pickles which can come with ranch or the dipping sauce for $12. I’m not even a huge on hearing guy but those are crazy good. But now they’ve got three new appetizers. Okay, and the first one is a spinach and artichoke dip. Now this is vegan This is a plant based item. It’s a blend of spinach artichoke red peppers, cauliflower cashew cheese Astrix on that I’m gonna come back to it. And oat milk served with housemade chips. Now I got all this info from Disney food blog that went and did a great review of it. They loved the spinach artichoke dip they said it was creamy and the taste was spot on. It wasn’t too salty. The cashew cheese I sort of have issue with I’ve tried it before. Not my favorite. But here’s what I will say I made it as like a queso a dipping sauce. And what I found was I did not like it alone. But if I had something really salty to dip into it, it was great. So like a tortilla chip dipping in really salty really sold it over for me. So Disney food blog felt like the house made chips that were served with this were way too salty, interesting. And I would say that’s highly probable like if you eat the chips by themselves, but I would guess that that is strategic with the cashew cheese as

Chris 3:56
I specifically called out that the the diff itself is not very not

Kelli 3:59
salty, right. So that’s my personal opinion. I will say I do love salt. Probably more than most so it can’t usually be too salty for me. But this has good reviews as far as what the spinach and artichoke dip tastes like it’s creamy. So I would again challenge those of you who are not vegan or plant based to give that a go it’s $13 They also have the Sci Fi smoked wings. Now these are smoked chicken wings tossed in a porter barbecue sauce so they house made pineapple and poppy seed coleslaw. That sounds fantastic. These are $15 and supposedly they are just the bomb. They just blow your mind and you wish you could order multiple orders of them for the mail and whatnot. Like they’re just phenomenal. Yeah. So smoke wings. The third is a black garlotte Caesar salad. This is This also sounds really good to eat Romaine you love a Caesar salad. Do petite romaine lettuce with Grilled artichoke hearts chopped apple wood smoked bacon Shea Parmesan topped with a housemaid black garlic caesar dressing and serve they toasted garlic Cristini

Chris 5:12
the idea of a black garlic anything some for some reason? Sounds great. Yeah, so

Kelli 5:16
that’s $11. And what I will say is, none of this is like your typical fare that you expect at sci fi right? You go in there sort of expecting shakes and burgers. So I love that they’re expanding the menu to sort of step out and have some really cool food options inside of sci fi. So and they have all those appetizers that lunch and dinner. So same with the entrees, everything’s the same lunch and dinner. They’ve got three new ones, but their standards are still in the menu, the drive in burger that’s going to be your signature burger. That also comes on brioche bun topped with smoked pork Bergen bacon jam cheddar lettuce in barbecue sauce was still not your average burger. Oh no, no $22 Your classic American burger is really a bacon cheeseburger. And it’s $20 They also have an oven roasted turkey sandwich and they’ve had that which they’ve had that for a while. This is on fresh baked multigrain croissant with Bacon Lettuce tomatoes and a cilantro avocado aoli for $18. A Pan Seared chicken pasta they’ve had that. This is a lemon butter sauce with rainbow tomatoes, onions spinach and a toasted garlic Cristini $24 Same situation but with salmon $25 Okay, so you can get it with with pasta I mean with chicken or salmon chicken is 24 Salmon is 25 and then they have the Impossible Burger, which is also comes with grilled portobello mushroom Kashi, mozzarella, garlic, tomato EO the nut free pesto, lettuce and tomato. I’ve had that before $21 I have had it before, but I’m pretty sure I had them give me real cheese instead of the cashew much.

Chris 7:02
Maybe that’s why.

Kelli 7:04
But yes, I have had that I think Disney does an amazing job with all of the impossible items. So then we’ve gotten three new items that are entrees one is called the feature film burger. So they have this feature film burger all the time and it’s essentially whatever feature is oh, I say the week right so our month or what have you so Disney food blog had an amazing feature film burger when they were there just this past week. I mean that had like a crab cake crab and shrimp cake on it. Oh interesting. They said it was just almost too big. Like you couldn’t get a full bite of everything because it was so tall. It’s such a massive Burger Challenge accepted $24 But they had a feature film burger that was called the pork on pork burger. Okay, that one has now been made a permanent fixture. That’s one of the new items on the menu. So this is a housemaid pork patty topped with roasted pork belly, white sharp cheddar, caramelized onions, cabbage slaw and a housemade Carolina mustard sauce. Oh,

Chris 8:07
man.

Kelli 8:08
I know. I sponsor those decisions fairly interesting. It’s 20 to 50. My understanding is the Carolina mustard sauce is no longer available at Regal Eagle Smokehouse that they took the mustard based barbecue off the menu. Yeah, I mean quite some time ago. So I find it interesting that that’s that that’s on their garbage is what I find. The other thing is the grilled chicken citrus salad which is romaine lettuce spinach arugula toss with rainbow tomatoes, candied pecans, cranberries and feta cheese, topped with a grilled marinated chicken and a housemaid citrus vinaigrette. Yeah, that sounds delicious. $18. Yeah. So that’s it. So essentially, they took their old feature film burger or one of the most popular feature film burgers they had and maybe a permanent fixture, a permanent fixture on the menu. Okay, now, I think the desserts are really where it’s at. So they have three standard desserts. One is the cookie shake. So this is going to be like okay using cream milkshake. But it is vegan. So it’s plant based milk. That is the only milkshake they’ve got on their menu. By the way, a little bit of a shame. I don’t I don’t think so. I think it’s fantastic. I mean, I think maybe you think it’s a shame because maybe you haven’t had a plant based milk cookies and coconut whipped cream kind of a situation but it’s good. It’s on the menu. They also have a hot fudge sundae for $8 and some fruit salad. But the two new things that are desserts look really out of this world and one of them is called out of this world. They look very spacey and different. Like you mentioned, maybe something you’d see on the house. See on your right. So the first one is called the Red Planet and this is a white chocolate cheesecake with a spiced blueberry compote on a graham cracker tart, with a match sponge and golden candied almonds for $9. Now what you might be saying there is none of that is red. And that is accurate. They actually like it looks to me like they use a red mirror glaze right over the top of it and so it looks like a red planet but nothing on the inside is red. The new one the second new one is called out of this world. And this is your pineapple mousse with passion fruit, cosmic squirrel, squirrel, squirrel, and a spice lime spaceship, garnish with space dust, and I blood orange Cooley. Dollars. There’s a lot going on in that it doesn’t look that complicated, but there’s a lot going on there. Now a couple things This isn’t new. But for your kiddos, your appetizers our garden salad or chicken noodle soup, which I love. I love that those are healthy appetizers for the kiddos. And they’re entrees or beef skewers chicken strips mac and cheese or cheeseburger. And so that’s still the same. But so yeah, I would say it’s an updated menu. It’s not a new, it’s not a new menu. It’s

Chris 11:06
new menu items. At best.

Kelli 11:07
I love the updates. I love that they’ve got more plant based options. And I love that they’re going in a way that really makes sci fi truly unique from a culinary experience, not just atmospheric it Sure

Chris 11:20
sure. You know a little snack shack vibe.

Kelli 11:24
I don’t think it loses the vibe. You still get the onion rings, you still get the fried dill pickles, you’re gonna get the burger with cheese and bacon.

Chris 11:31
I mean, it’s gonna be a jacked up burger it’s gonna have it’s gonna be delightful and have a crab cake on it or some pork and right, it’ll be delightful. It’s gonna be great. I’m excited about our next time at the Sci Fi dine in theater, which is you know, we’d like it when they when they fake the outside on the inside. Okay, so on the World Showcase. So I was listening to another podcast recently, just a wonderful father daughter team at Disney assemble podcast, Troy and Nene, we love them. They are totally adorbs. And you should absolutely check out their show. They’re amazing. They were discussing as part of their show their hot tech show. I think this this recently, that we’re discussing a specific ride that no longer exists at Walt Disney World. And it made me wonder what other sort of defunct no longer existing Walt Disney World attractions, what I just really love to do again. So I got help with this from syfy.com and travel and leisure.com. And I’m only going to do four really in detail. And then there’s a there’s a bunch of others, we do another podcast about it or whatever. But possibly the top two rods on my list I’ve done as whole segments before. They don’t exist anymore. So go back and listen to the segments on Body Wars, which was a simulation ride at Epcot back in the day. And the Extra Terrestrial alien adventure, which I absolutely just went bonkers for I loved it. But all you folks out there got super scared I was having heart attacks and whatnot scary. So they had to take it out. Um, so So in no particular order. I’m just going to do four rides that I wish we could do again, in addition to those two, in addition to those two, yes. All right, the first like I said, in no particular order, The Great Movie Ride.

Kelli 13:32
Yeah, I did love Mary Poppins.

Chris 13:36
There were more movies than just Mary Poppins. Yeah. This is actually the ride Detroit and Mimi on Disney assembled we’re talking about in their episode. That made me wonder if there were other rides. I wish took a ride again. This This ride was perfect to me. Yeah, it you wrote through all these wonderful Disney. These wonderful movie scenes, not just Disney movie scenes. The animatronics were great. The music was great. Those movies they chose to show you in the stars. They were great. The ride conductor took part in it right one of the animatronics was actually a live person, either a cowboy or a gangster, they would hijack your car. And, you know, he get his comeuppance later, you know, in one of the other movie scenes, and then they had this wonderful montage this widescreen wonderful movie montage at the very end. If you loved movies, yes. You just totally got that that I love movies vibe. It felt very Hollywood. It did. Yes, it was golden age of Hollywood Golden Age of Hollywood. The music was perfect. It just it just gave me all the right fields. That guy that time that we were behind in line didn’t say a word for two and a half hours we were in line. The pre show of that was basically watching trailers from old movies. Just do didn’t Say a word for two hours. And suddenly, a trailer for The Searchers comes up and he screams Big John. The movies made this apparently mute man. screen. So is it. I love that right? I mean, I liked the new one. I liked runaway railway, but I just I really hated that they got rid of the gravy,

Kelli 15:24
right? Maybe Rob was good. Okay,

Chris 15:26
so the next one if you ever read this horizons at Epcot, do you remember horizons? Remember horizons Horizons is where mission spaces today and how is a completely different building. It was like this pyramid shaped building. It was a 15 minute long ride. Your ride car was sort of like an omni mover, right? Like on a lot of the other rides, we’d go through show scenes just like the other rides give you a glimpse into this idyllic vision of the future using you know these these diorama type set so that I’m atronics and whatnot, you would go travel into space and see Space Station Bravo Centauri, or you and you would go to a desert area called My severity, you’d go to an underwater city called the Sea Castle research base. Then you’d actually this was what really set it apart and made it groundbreaking. You actually got to choose which version of those things you wanted to experience in person, you would just press a button on your car display. And then using some well placed blinders, these blinders would pop up between your cars, and a couple of like 70 millimeter OMNIMAX movie screens your ride car would take you to your chosen destination and back so you would either cool your car would you know I’m using air quotes turned into an undersea type you know two persons submarine and you would travel to this the research base underwater or you’d go to the desert area that’s cool on you know in a simulation type sort of setting. And again, 15 minute long ride it was it was really a pretty, pretty cool experience. But you never read that. No,

Kelli 17:17
I don’t remember that at all. It

Chris 17:18
was it was on that side over there where like the world of motion or the test track is today. Oh, next. I don’t know if this is gonna be a hot take or not the maelstrom.

Kelli 17:31
Really? Yeah, I wish you could write it again.

Chris 17:34
I wish I could ride the Maelstrom again.

Kelli 17:36
I like the Elsa Ana version. Yeah, I mean I’m a fan of the Elsa on a version I’m also

Chris 17:41
including the little you know promotional movie there you would go in and right after you got off the boat ride you go into this little theater and they show you a movie about Norway. I love on an Elsa the whole frozen gang.

Kelli 17:51
I love it. Great job with the indoor cue there.

Chris 17:54
They did. They did. You’re right. I you know I loved the movie Frozen. This ride today is still the exact same ride just with a frozen scan. So it’s not really about the ride. I’m not really against the IP of Disney attractions at Epcot. But one of the things I love about World Showcase, especially when it’s incorporating cast members that are from those cultural regions. I love learning about the cultures and the countries in World Showcase. And Maelstrom did a wonderful job of introducing you to sort of the the history and lore of Norway, their their Viking heritage but also their you know, their their vision of their own future. I can still feel myself riding through the area where that big sea oil platform is and the polar bears and it feels like you’re literally riding through a of you know a violent seascape in Norway in the Arctic Ocean so just loved that ride and honestly, I thought the little promotional video to the end was also really really good. So I would I would love for it plus do we get the meat on an Elsa right next door? Yeah, Norway doesn’t have to all be about on an Elsa

Kelli 19:19
well it’s not they’ve got the bakery

Chris 19:22
right what’s the name of that bakery?

Kelli 19:23
Yeah, I don’t know. But then they’ve also Creme de la

Chris 19:28
Creme. Creme de la

Kelli 19:32
they’ve also completely changed their shop inside they’re not selling a bunch of on and Elsa stuff anymore. It is very heavily like if you’re interested in going for an Arctic ski. That’s true art Arctic holiday. That’s true. They do some shopping.

Chris 19:45
You’re not gonna wear any of that stuff out in Florida. Yes, that’s true. Okay, so, so Great Movie Ride horizons maelstrom. Okay, and I think this one’s This is outside of the box. Okay. The Adventures Club at Pleasure Island this is not this is not an attraction this is a this is a fish is a bar is what this this was about can

Kelli 20:09
feel like you’re you’re been in your Oh, sorry, just a little bit

Chris 20:12
more. I’m absolutely not this is anybody that knows the adventurers club is out there right now. Absol Absolutely. on their feet in agreement.

Kelli 20:22
I thought this was rides that are different.

Chris 20:27
I should have said attractions and experiences. But that’s not what you said. Oh, well, that’s what I’m saying that the interest so first off, it was a pleasure Island, which is what used to be the area that is now really the landing at Disney Springs. Yep. Right you cross those bridges over into this area where like art Smith’s is, and that area was called was Pleasure Island. It deserves its own full segment to Pleasure Island and I’m going to do it. This was this was easily the best of the Pleasure Island offerings it was set in the 1930s. This was a club for explorers and adventurers to meet up over stiff drinks and share their stories of of wild times. It included live performers, audio audit, animatronics and puppets, multiple floors of walls covered with trophies of these exploits of these adventurers, and you walked out feeling like a legitimate part of the club. To this day, the society of explorers and adventurers SCA is used in backstories of attractions like the Jungle Cruise Skipper canteen, well and numerous attractions at restaurants in Tokyo, Disney Sea, Mystic Manor at Disneyland is based on SCA, it all sort of got its start at the adventurers club. And it was the kind of thing where the puppets would react live to whatever people were doing or whatever they had people doing in the audience. Okay, it was just kind of like you just you went in there. You ordered some drinks and just waited to see what craziness happened.

Kelli 22:05
Okay,

Chris 22:06
so the adventurers club, a Pleasure Island.

Kelli 22:09
Okay. I think that definitely stretched the segue. Absolutely

Chris 22:11
not. Anybody that has been to the adventurers club is 100% on my side, okay. I’ve got like seven others that I just were other notables that I can do in another segment that can

Kelli 22:25
you can do entire segments on a whole series on different drugs.

Chris 22:30
Get to a whole podcast, there is a podcast on different drives. Hey, folks, that’s this week’s show. I cannot wait to find out.
