welcome aboard Disney fam Hello out there Disney fam. My name is Chris. I’m Kelly. Welcome to this week’s podcast. We’re so excited to be here recording a little later than normal. So we’re gonna try to keep the energy level up anyway level up you’re wearing your space mountaineers that I bought you on a on a single solo trip too.
Kelli 0:49
I know you did. So good. Those these years are some of my favorites and they’re actually very comfortable. I am there not even remotely topic adjacent not even close to it not even from the same park as to what I’m talking about. But I would like to get into that spaceship and go into space right now. In a different world. And so I was looking at my ear selection and I was like, which is which is fairly fast calling to me tonight. And it was like oh my gosh, another planet would be nice. Want to be on another planet a planet? Maybe were like college students and plagiarism don’t exist.
Chris 1:26
Oh, it would be if you got about a week. You got about a week and that’ll be this planet for at least for a couple of weeks. Hey, so we have downloads this week. From Maitland Florida. Maitland Maitland, Florida. Yes, this is 20,000 lucky folks who live just outside of Orlando. Not lucky because they live in Florida, as we’ll see later, but lucky due to proximity to Disney World and other amazing theme parks.
Kelli 1:52
So good for mate lenders.
Unknown Speaker 1:54
Yep. Maybe that’s what they call them.
Kelli 1:56
I think they should. Okay,
Chris 1:58
Klamath Falls Oregon.
Kelli 2:00
Did you just pick all hard names to say
Chris 2:02
this week May I will things like I did. Klamath Falls Oregon. Yes. Gorgeous, gorgeous, stereotypical Oregon. Looking at community community on the Klamath River South. Southwest Oregon, near the California border. Okay. McCool junction, Nebraska. Now this is really close to us. Store 500 Fine, Nebraska. Nice folks. Just west of us, right over in New York County. And, again, totally unintentionally, celebrating Asian and Pacific Islander. Right. Okay. Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Now that sounds lovely. Yes, Kuala Lumpur the capital of Malaysia. Like this is one of those like ultra modern Skylines that we often see over there. Dominated of course by the 451 meter tall Petronas Twin Towers. You’ve seen these? Yeah, in movies and whatnot. Wow. Yeah. Sounds and they’re but they’re listening to us. I should have somebody was somebody in that huge tower? I know some it’s probably just some one person. Lots of people
Kelli 3:17
a lot of like, it’s a listening party of really cool people in Malaysia.
Chris 3:22
Yes, we’re huge in Kuala Lumpur.
Kelli 3:27
Give it to us.
Chris 3:29
All right. Look, I hate talking about all the political stuff too. But that’s it’s, it’s out there. It’s real the Disney life right now it is. So last week, we talked about the Florida Legislature passing a bill for the state to take over monorail inspections this week. This past week. DeSantis signed that bill into law. So now the monorails are under state inspection guidance. Not Disney. At least until a court rules always otherwise
Kelli 3:59
loss. Yes. Yes. Because they’re gonna hear our segment about how well Disney has been doing with the monorail fair. Good. And did you hear
Chris 4:08
that? Do you guys even have people that know how to inspect monorails at the state
Kelli 4:14
what colors to use on Christmas?
Chris 4:20
So this week, Disney also held its shareholder meeting and and, you know, up and down numbers. They’ve had some drop in their stock price on the on the concerns around the streaming services, that sort of thing. But the parks brought in like over $7 billion in revenue. But people were wanting to know what Iger was going to say about the Florida political landscape. For the first time, Disney issued a formal warning to Disney investors that included Florida among other international political situation As debt could negatively impact Disney, so for example, Russian aggression in Ukraine, Hong Kong sketchy relationship with China instability and France and now a hostile Florida government Wow. Yes. Yes. Specifically or they stated in their in their warning in Florida steps directed at the company, including the passage of legislation have taken, have been taken and future actions had been threatened, which collectively could negatively impact and may have already impacted our ability to execute on our business strategy, our costs and the profitability of our operations in Florida.
Kelli 5:38
Oh, my gosh, what so if they win the court case that right so they’re listing that right, and if they win the court case against DeSantis, then they could sue for damages?
Chris 5:47
Oh, maybe. That’s fair. That’s a fair point there.
Kelli 5:50
I could sue for damages and say it impacted our shareholders and shareholders could sue for damages,
Chris 5:57
like a class attached to him personally. Ultimately, Iger issued a not so veiled threat, Florida, is attacking Disney over a difference of opinion related to a marginalized community in violation of Disney’s first amendment rights. And it boils down to I’m paraphrasing Iger here, whether the governor wants Disney to move forward with its plan to invest $17 billion over the next 10 years into its Florida operations, including the 1000s of jobs that come with that investment. Right. I mean, come on,
Kelli 6:33
you’re making dumb decisions. DeSantis like you’re literally hurting the economy of the state by going after the biggest employer. This is ridiculous.
Chris 6:40
And what’s interesting is that Florida legislative session finally ended. Okay. Right. And it ended without the Florida Legislature legislator legislation. Sure. Passing any laws about ride or attraction inspections, other than the monorails. And so that I think that proves that what they didn’t do, it proves the point that do you think that Disney is not doing a good job and inspecting it drives or not? Or is this something else just if you really if you really believed that they needed state oversight, then you’d pass all these things to get that done. Iger also made the point I didn’t realize this that there are like 2000 special districts in Florida that have special tax laws related to them. Like the Daytona Motor Speedway has a specific oh my god tax district we’re gonna break those down. Right. And they didn’t that’s his point. They didn’t the the laws that they passed, in fact one of almost 2000 districts, the villages that huge retirement community in Florida, special tax district. So any case,
Kelli 7:48
yeah. Nicholas it’s targeted and everybody sees it.
Chris 7:52
at a federal level us rep. Tony Neal’s of Texas, of course, along with Lauren Bogut of Colorado and Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia proud members of the chock a block full of nuts caucus has filed a federal bill calling for the end to Walt Disney World and Disney lands, no fly zone laws. It’s not much of a no fly zone. But there’s a bubble over Magic Kingdom and part of Epcot that you can’t fly below 3000 feet. These clowns are calling for an end to that because you know go well go broke according to them.
Kelli 8:29
I mean, that’s got that you’ve got massive massive amounts of people in those parks. Would you like to potentially open that up to I don’t know. I
Chris 8:38
don’t I mean,
Kelli 8:39
I mean it’s that’s violin
Chris 8:41
it’s it’s not you know, I don’t know if there’s a lot of is 3000 feet we’ve seen like Sky writers at Hollywood Studios before you know, which is not included in that bubble by the way Animal Kingdom and Hollywood see as is not included in that. It’s this is just pure political attack. It’s it’s also stupid. He also effective on May the 10th. He named Glenn Gilson Jr, the district administrator for this new what replaced the Reedy Creek district. Gilson is the chair of the state of Florida’s commission on ethics and has been appointed to the position twice by Governor DeSantis. These folks are supposed to investigate the complaints of misuse of public trust by government officials. For example, if Ron DeSantis was breaking the law by having a a shadow gubernatorial campaign, and using state plains and state funds to do that, that would be unethical. No worries though, because this guy has already cleared him of any wrongdoing there.
Kelli 9:49
Oh, wow.
Chris 9:51
He’s gonna make $400,000 a year as the administrator for projects
Kelli 9:57
is that 100% in bribes or is did they actually take out taxes? It feels
Chris 10:02
like I’m gonna pay you $400,000 Just to do what I say.
Kelli 10:06
Yes, it was like a bribe salary.
Chris 10:12
So it happier news. Okay, Disney is going to relaunch the Disney dining plan next year, which is very, very exciting. We’ve got we’ve got first one it has
Kelli 10:23
the festival menus still have still have all eligibility
Chris 10:27
which told us it was always coming back. We’ve got close friends that literally won’t go unless they can get the dining plan because they don’t know how babies are made or something. Starting they’ve got big families. That’s what that means. Starting May 31. This year, you can add dining plans to vacation packages as of January nights next year. So if you’re going to be going after January 9, wait till May 31. To book your plans, and you can include a dining plan.
Kelli 10:53
So no news then on pricing or what it includes or what. There’s
Chris 10:57
only two plans. One is a counter service only plan and the other is a more fulsome dining counter service and the dining plan a lot like one time you and I almost died on it. First year, the first year they had it. They gave us everything. They had way too many snacks. Yes. But yeah, so they had they used to have four plans now they’ll have to in the new one. Also lots of changes coming in 2024 for the reservation system. Annual Pass holders will not have to use reservation systems except for select days all that and if you buy a specific day tickets, you won’t have to get a reservation for that. That seems like a system issue a whole time anyway. If you bought it for a specific day, why would you get a reservation, right? So it seems like they got that bug fixed. Also, this is a big deal. Starting next year, Jeannie plus will allow you to select lightning Lane purchases before you go. Instead of waking at like 7am to try to get on a lightning lane. You can buy lightning Lane access like
Kelli 11:57
90 days in advance.
Chris 11:58
You got a vacation plan. That’s nice. Yeah. Yeah. So all that’s very, very good.
Kelli 12:03
You’ll still be waking up at 7am. Like what if it’s 90 days out? You
Chris 12:07
Oh, they’ll have other guys out? Maybe? Yeah, probably. And also they’ll still have virtual cues for new attractions that you’ll have to get up at 7am to do. at Magic Kingdom. The planet looks like they’re about to start installing Tiana’s, Tiana’s foods water tower, which will be like the sort of the weenie for that attraction for the bayou adventure and also you can now get a Disney 100 Cinderella pumpkin coach that Warren Buffett amazing I do love them I
Kelli 12:39
saw them and I was like that is a cool popcorn buckets very much fantastic. Yes 100% For that oh
Chris 12:48
goodness to eat to the beat concert series lineup has been announced. Tiffany think I’m alone.
Kelli 12:56
Does it seem to be it wanna read? Gosh, that just took me straight.
Chris 13:02
I mean, there are so many bigger bands that are gonna be there but I called out Tiffany but you know I was in love with her 10 year old me was in love with her Edna Mode experience probably a GA s jacket probably at legions the mode experience reopens Hollywood studios and you can meet Mr. or Mrs. Incredible there. Okay. The Disney Vacation Club tower at Polynesian is just shooting up it has topped out at 10 floors wait to stay there wait there we got a first look at the frozen thing rollercoaster at the Hong Kong Disneyland there’d been a whole Disney Frozen themed area like the Imagineers got to ride it even though wow so it’s close it well the the aesthetics are not all that close but the riders ride is pretty close. That’s awesome. Yep. Either maybe next year Disney plus and who heard your
Kelli 14:00
music stuff here? Yeah, we all did to Disney
Chris 14:04
Plus is a big deal. Okay. Disney did not come right out and say that they were going to purchase Comcast who they who have own a share of Hulu. Right. Right. But they are definitely looking. I think that the future is that Hulu and Disney plus are all one app. Yeah. I
Kelli 14:21
mean essentially they’re essentially they’re now like with Verizon, you have a Verizon account you get ESPN Who
Chris 14:27
is this class? I think it’s gonna sort of buried there. They’re all going to be they’re gonna start offering a lot of the stuff you see on Hulu, I think on Disney plus, so it’s gonna feel like one stop shopping.
Kelli 14:38
Yeah. Okay, that’s cool.
Chris 14:39
You ready for Tomorrowland? You seem like you’re ready for Tomorrowland.
Kelli 14:43
I’m very ready. I mean, you will over okay, well, let’s go. In case you haven’t heard there is a new sushi restaurant coming to Japan.
Chris 14:52
Might have strategically left that out of my news.
Kelli 14:56
It was announced like five days ago and this is really cool. So you You’ve done a section on to me time Yes. And we’d love to have Benito Yes. So this this restaurant is going to be on the second floor of the Japan pavilion taking the place of what was called Tokyo dining. Yes. Which has been closed for refurb since November of 22. And now we know why. So now we know why right so this restaurant is called Shiki sai sushi is a kya
Chris 15:23
say that you had to say that it is
Kelli 15:27
a table service restaurant that they say is opening in the summer of 2023 but there’s no official days but that’s not long that’s you know within the next few months they call it a festive dining experience. Okay now is a chi a style right so is a chi a dining in Japanese means that it’s shareable. Okay. Also is a kya is like an informal Japanese pub. So it translates to be like Sookie stay like our Saki stay like getting Saki to stay. So sort of you’re, you’re in you’re just chilling. You know? It’s it’s not formal. Okay,
Chris 16:08
it’s sit down. It’s but it’s, it’s easy. It’s easy, breezy. Yes.
Kelli 16:14
So we had a restaurant in Charlotte called musanze, where when you went in, there was like a sushi bar there. And people would come in and just sort of chill at the bar. It’s that type of an experience. Sushi Bar where somebody’s making it right in front of you. But you can also eat at tables, you know, nearby. So this is they serve essentially alcoholic drinks and snacks. But this is going to be more than that. It’s a casual place. They say they call it for like after work drinking. Like a Spanish tapas bar, or a pub or an American tavern, something along those lines, but the Japanese version, the Japanese version, okay, because that sounds fun. Yes. So it is a compound word is a kya meaning to stay and Saki shop. And so it originated from the idea that Saki shops would allow customers to sit on the premises and drink instead of getting it to go, okay. And they also typically have the traditional paper lanterns outside. Okay, so you see a lot of those pictures, but that’s a traditional izakayas style. Okay. Yep. So normally like in Japan, and is a kya restaurant would be like all you can eat or all you can drink for a set price per person. There’s no word on whether that’s how this setup like that. I cannot confirm that. But that’s typically how it is in Japan. But what that means is you would go in and pay like $50 I’m making this up. And it’s all you can eat in like two hours. So there’s, there’s a time limit, or all you can drink in a certain number of hours. Again, no confirmation that that’s what this is. But that’s how it might be. It’s a kya style in Japan. Yes. Food is typically ordered at a slow pace in several courses. Right. So again, you’re not in a rush. You’re chilling. You’re drinking I’m really liking you’re just kind of enjoying it. Yeah, yeah. Hope this is what it is. Yes. So they say this is how they describe it. Experience the essence of Japan’s seasonal festivals, where each month brings a new celebration to your table. So this is going to be an ever changing menu from hanging Tanzaku to celebrate Tabata in July with savoring Moon viewing dumplings in September, a cultural representative from Japan will guide you through each unique festival experience one bite at a time. Oh, so this very excited about updating menu, that’s going to be a cool thing.
Chris 18:49
Also, I like this idea of a cultural representative guide yes through. So it’s educational, as much as anything yes
Kelli 18:58
and ever changing and something like that. So there’s also an open Sushi Bar and Grill. So I’m going to give you some of the menu highlights. Again, there’s no set menu, because this is an ever changing situation. Okay, but I’m going to give you some of the highlights. So at the sushi bar, we’ve got three particular highlights. One of them is Cobourg a sushi, which translates to mean overflowing sushi. And this item is overflowing with flavors. Okay? It features Negi Toro and NACA Oh chi tuna elegantly paired with salmon roe and green onion. Can we just stop for a minute and talk about how great my Japanese is? And
Chris 19:41
thrilled that this is what we’re doing tonight.
Kelli 19:45
I’m killing this. You
Chris 19:46
have done a great job thus far.
Kelli 19:48
I’m killing it. Yes. So that’s overflowing sushi, right. So the idea is overflowing with flavors, a lot of different options there. Then you have the Tokyo Negi roll. This combined green on median tempura rolled with tuna tataki and topped with jalapeno aoli shredded carrot and sliced jalapeno. Right. So this is some cool, interesting
Chris 20:10
different stuff that’s almost fusion. Yeah.
Kelli 20:13
And they say that it’s really cool because again, you’re sitting at the bar and watching them make it and that is sort of a cool thing in you know, sushi restaurant, so I’m sure they’re gonna have like a famous, you know, sushi bar person, because that’s one of the yells at you and that’s what brings it right. It’s somebody you want to watch make sushi because they’re so amazing. The last one is is cool. It’s called the Fujimori, which translates to a boatload of different sushi. And it is literally served on a boat, of
Chris 20:42
course, of course, because you see those boats that go around the little river. Yeah, love it.
Kelli 20:50
So it features sashimi and sushi arranged on a boat shaped platter, this iteration of finna Mori is even served with the festive pomp at the boat procession of the famous 10 Jean Matsuri. So it’s like a whole experience and it did like there’s a lot of stuff going on on this boat like there’s a lot happening. So those are again, just some sushi bar menu highlights those could change I love I love it too. Okay, so then you’ve got the Izakaya menu. So the is a chi a menu is going to be shareables but also sort of in the bar chilled laid back or type of a vein. Okay. So, the first the first highlight there we have is a Karachi J chicken. This is essentially fried chicken marinated in soy sauce, Saki ginger and Marin to give it a touch of sweetness. Yeah, it looks amazing of looks absolutely amazing. But so you can get the idea, right? It’s like a pub, right? Fried chicken like marinated in some really cool stuff. Then you’ve got salmon. miza yaki, Miss missa. Yaki translates to miso grilled, okay, so the miso adds like a flavor of a deep umami. I can’t say that without thinking of that episode and friends that will sue Nagi Bobby,
Chris 22:14
you see Ross saying, Oh Nike.
Kelli 22:18
The miso adds like a it says a deep umami paired with sugar mirin and Saki. So again, like you’ve got Saki infused into some of the dishes honey, I really hope you don’t toss them into the shroud will
Chris 22:32
not throw the grilled salmon into the shrub. Okay.
Kelli 22:36
Okay, so anyway, it looks the salmon miso yaki looks amazing. They also have in the Izakaya menu, just a tomato salad with avocado. There’s clearly some soy sauce and stuff in there. But again, these are shareable platters so you think we get a big salad? You get a couple of some fried chicken wings. I mean, that’s essentially what it looks like some of this some of that blooded a blonde with
Chris 23:01
a little Japanese culture. Yeah, sprinkled on top. Yes. And you’re just chillin and relaxing. I love the sound of
Kelli 23:07
this. Smoking bball outside
Chris 23:13
into the Fresh Prince.
Kelli 23:16
Okay, there’s one grilled item menu, highlight. And then the other things are just things I saw in the in the pictures posted because again, they’re being a bit they’re really vague booking this because the menu is supposed to change. So one grilled menu item is Okonomiyaki. This is a Japanese savory pancake, and it is made with flour, eggs, water and then filled with shredded cabbage and bacon, topped with tangy okonomiyaki sauce, mayonnaise, a nori bonito flakes and pickled ginger. Wow. So this is something that we don’t see a lot here in the States. But a lot of Asian cuisine includes the savory pancakes. Yeah, my friend that’s from Korea, makes a kimchi pancake. That is amazing. So I think this type of thing is going to be phenomenal. I think it’s going to be so great. Other things that I saw in the photos, which, you know, again, we’re vague booking these be with our eyes. Definitely plenty of Tim pure options, which I think Tim pura is just like better heaven. Yes, definitely some oysters. I saw plenty of steak. Also calamari ahi tuna saw a lot of that and I saw something that looks like some type of a sesame grilled eggplant. So I think they’re gonna have some cool veggie plant based options.
Chris 24:49
So this is upstairs above the like, sort of where Tepito is but to the right, yes.
Kelli 24:54
And so you have views of the big arch and of the lagoon.
Speaker 1 24:57
Oh, nice. Yes. Um, is Japan the is Japan the best food destination in me that showcase? I
Kelli 25:07
feel like it’s a bit sacrilegious that you even suggest that given that France exists, but
Chris 25:13
that’s the thing is that is it?
Kelli 25:16
I don’t know, I think that’s worthy of a debate. I do think they have probably the best trio of restaurants. It’s right or wrong, right, really, the best trio of sit down or counter service. We’ve
Chris 25:31
eaten more than one French restaurant in the France pavilion. We’ve only really had some stuff from the little outdoor counter service place. Yes,
Kelli 25:41
I have. That’s something I mean, France kills it at the festivals. They’ve got that art design day glasses place which is really good. They’ve got the cheese and the bread on the inside, which is great pastries.
Chris 25:53
patisserie in the St. Paul’s, they’ve got to France.
Kelli 25:56
So I think they’ve got good food in France. But I think Japan may have the best trio of restaurants. I don’t think it has a whole Paris has a strong trio. I think they have a lot of good individual foods. So it’s got a very strong trio there. Yeah,
Chris 26:12
they do. It’s like it’s good. I cannot wait to go back and also kind of want to go to Japan.
Unknown Speaker 26:18
Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, for sure.
Chris 26:21
All right. Here we go. Taking a turn. So a couple of weeks ago, Disney celebrated dapper days, the Dapper Day spring outing. I love that they call it that right if you don’t know dapper days are Google that they had an Epcot on April the 30th. And Magic Kingdom will may 1. Dapper days deserves its own segment. Yeah, honestly. 100% But that reminded me of the dapper Dan’s the talented and funny barbershop quartet that have provided so many magical moments on Main Street USA. Luckily, on April the 11th this year, in honor of National barbershop quartet day, the Disney Parks blog provided a history of the dapper Dan’s Oh, written by the dapper Dan’s themselves. So that’s where my the information most of the information from I love
Kelli 27:13
the Dapper Dan.
Chris 27:14
They’re great. They’re great. So what are the dapper Dan’s? If you don’t know, they are a barbershop quartet which generally had been in existence barbershop quartets that is, had been in existence since the late 1800s. Now I went down a real rabbit hole here today because I learned something
Speaker 2 27:32
you love this is this is these types of rabbit holes. Well, this
Chris 27:36
is absolutely not going to surprise you. Okay, Lynn Abbott, a jazz activist at Tulane University was an expert on early African American popular music and gospel quartets. He discovered overwhelming evidence that barbershop quartet thing was pervasive in African American culture in the late 1800s and early 1900s, including among many men, who went on to become pioneers of jazz. Of
Kelli 28:00
course, of course, I love that they use it as a verb quartet thing I know.
Chris 28:07
Starting in the late 1880s, and 1890s, the black community harmonized recreationally, the popular songs of the day as well as spirituals and folk songs, improvising harmonies, according to long standing African American musical practice, from these sessions arose certain idiosyncratic musical qualities that are the hallmarks of what now we now consider the barbershop style. That’s fantastic. Of course, it was appropriated by white folks, they even had white folks doing barbershop quartet and blackface minstrel shows in the in the early 90s. Oh my gosh,
Kelli 28:38
well on the dapper dance was a fairly white group for quite some time they have diversified they had very well versed diversified but of course, they were primarily white for a while
Chris 28:47
whether whether these included bad puns, like the dapper Dan’s use today is a mystery. But on April the 11th 1938 26 men from around the country met in Tulsa, Oklahoma. That’s the moment recognized as the birth of the true barbershop quartet, Tulsa,
Kelli 29:04
Oklahoma, Tulsa, Oklahoma, yes, saw that come in. They formed
Chris 29:08
the barbershop harmony society, which is where I got the information about the history with the African American culture. The US though April 11, is recognized as their day. Now, the first barbershop harmony group, Disney Disney, performed in Disney Land in 1957. And it was made of three guys in a girl. Oh, interesting like that. But the dance officially started entertaining folks on Main Street at Disneyland in 1959. When Magic Kingdom opened up in 1971, it was just natural that the dance would pack up and head east for opening day. So they’d been at they’d been on Main Street USA at the Magic Kingdom ever since knotch. Since day one. The group was created by Park talent supervisor, Chuck Corson, who previously worked in Casting at Walt Disney Studios. His first batch of Dapper Dan performers who eventually became the the dapper Dan’s were pulled from a fairly popular singing group at the time called Fred Waring and the Pennsylvanians. There’s never been a more 1950s name group than that. So he snapped for folks out of that group and they became the dapper Dan’s. Not long after that, in 1964, college kids came to Disneyland, just to see the barbershop quartet there. They were, they were such huge barbershop quartet lovers, that they they went to Disneyland just to see the Quartet. And they started singing themselves right there on Main Street. And Chuck Corson solved them and was blown away
Kelli 30:51
like they were singing to the dance. Yes, answer singing, right.
Chris 30:53
So there’s their singing too. And of course it happened to stumble across them and was blown away said they were sensational hire them on the spot and they became they became the dapper Dan’s and adopted the style and the in the brand of nostalgia and small town charm that these who always for likable guys are right, that’s that’s the group that sort of created what we know today. Today, the Dan’s bringing in talent from all over the world, including multiple groups at both us parks, and they’ve started quartets in Paris and Hong Kong parks.
Kelli 31:32
So what you’re saying is like, it’s not the same dance, I think a lot of
Chris 31:38
different had gotten multiple dang groups, even like, say at Walt Disney World. Yep. I could be wrong about that. They usually stay like for sure. They usually stay within a couple blocks on Main Street or town square. And they they historically done their traditional candy colored pinstripes for decades, they’ve been performing for like 60 years. At this point, the Dapper Day ends as a group. But over the years, they have worked a few seasonal looks and performance in obviously, during the holidays, you’ll catch them and singing holiday tunes wearing green and red stripes. I think the most clever version is that when they transform into their undead alter egos, the cadaver dance. Yeah, I’ve got I mean really great. Dead face makeup.
Kelli 32:29
They have women now, right?
Chris 32:30
I don’t know. I don’t know that I’ve ever seen a woman Dan.
Kelli 32:35
I thought I thought the last time we were there. And we were watching them from like the upper balcony. So
Chris 32:42
we saw the citizens of Main Street. Sure, like the mayor and the fire chief and they see and they
Kelli 32:49
dance okay, but maybe the woman there was a citizen? I think so. Yeah. Okay, interesting.
Chris 32:58
Despite how things have changed over the years, which really isn’t all that much the dance have held on to traditional barbershop harmonies. While they usually perform acapella sometimes he didn’t get some playing a very particular and interesting instrument. The hope I’m saying this right there Deegan, Oregon chimes, these are these are like they look like organ pipes. But they work sort of like bells. Right? So you’ll see them holding these things. See, you’ve definitely seen them. Yes. And so sometimes they will sing and play those bells at the same time. Nobody has really made these bells since the late 1920s. But the dance started working them into their act in the 1970s. As for Chuck Corson, after the opening of Walt Disney World, he was honored with a window on Main Street USA in the Magic Kingdom. It’s above the emporium and we’ve talked about how hard it is to get one of those. It’s hard to get one of those windows and I think he’s been there since the start. Yeah, he was the if you look on the windows, look for the new era band and choir director he serves. He is cast as the he’s the casting director. So he’s on one window that that that fake company takes up to Windows, there’s he and another person, and he’s the casting director for that fake company on the window. There’s a fun story floating around the internet of Chuck and Walt getting stuck in a snowdrift in Chuck’s car when they were working together on developing the entertainment that would be used around the squall Valley Winter Olympics in 1960. They got snowed in their hotel, Walt was like no, I want to get to the to the entertainment site. And he told Chuck to drive him and they got stuck in their car for a couple in his car for a couple of hours until somebody could come and rescue them. Wow. My personal favorite moment with dapper Dan’s. It’s, I mean, over and over again. I tell stories about me and my grandmother going to Disney because So one year in particular, I wanted to get got my hair cut at the barber shop on Main Street. Today it is in town square where the fire department or whatever, back then it was sort of off one of the side alleys. Yeah. And I was I’m gonna get my hair cut. I let it like grow longer and avoid Erica so that I could get my hair cut at the Main Street barber shop on Main Street USA Disney. And when we get there, it had to be the first trip because they were tired of my hair and tired of hearing about us. I was gonna get a haircut. I’m sure we stop in there. And I got sitting in the barbershop chair. There was the barbers. That was me. There was my grandmother, and there were the dapper Dan’s, and they serenaded me personally, while I got a haircut, they say Mr. Sandman personally, all I gotta do
Kelli 35:54
not just burst Luke, Chris, how did he not just burst into tears? Well,
Chris 35:58
I mean, I might be a little more robotic back then I’m much more likely to burst into tears today than I was back then. But I thought it was really really cool. I didn’t appreciate it for what it was like I do now. But there I sat, getting my hair cut. It was the entry and exit way for them onto Main Street. So they would they would enter from backstage through the barber shop. And so it looks like though the deputy hands are coming out of the barbershop and so on their way back into Backstage, I’m assuming they stopped and they serenaded me with Mr. Sammon
Speaker 2 36:33
is how old do you think you were? I was probably say eight
Chris 36:37
ish. Something like that. Maybe. Now, I’ll bet my grandma cried.
Kelli 36:45
She was suddenly very excited about the hair. Yeah.
Chris 36:48
So that was really, really cool. I can still see for some reason I can see I still see the guy in green and his little his little green armband that’s around his arm. I don’t know why he stuck out to me in particular. But what it was an amazing moment. And I have always, that always had a special place in my heart for the dapper Dan’s. And they’re one of the things that if you see them, you got to stop. You got to stop and see. Yeah,
Kelli 37:10
absolutely. They’re like the original cavalcade. Right? They
Chris 37:13
are they are like the original cavalcade. So. Yeah, the dapper Dan’s always great. Try to try to catch on Sure. There’s a million videos on YouTube.
Kelli 37:24
