Welcome aboard Disney fam. Hello out there Disney fam. Welcome to this week’s show. My name is Chris and I’m Kelly. Kelly’s wearing her Mickey Mouse hands. Jazz hands.
Kelli 0:43
I call it Mickey Mouse jazz.
Chris 0:45
Mickey Mouse jazz hands here is to Mickey Mouse hands sticking out of the top of your head. Right.
Kelli 0:49
Exactly. And they I would not say that they’re even related to the topic. I thought jazz hands why not? All right, my topic feels like jazz hands. I don’t know. I’m not sure I’m wearing a sweatshirt, maybe it’s salt, maybe my collection and I was like jazz hands. Da net. That’s just that’s just what they were calling to me tonight. And so that’s what I went well
Chris 1:13
go with what’s calling to you. That’s what I thought. You know, it’s calling to me. The people who listen this week. We’ll get real good. After three years of these segues, you know, killing Texas we had downloads from Killeen, Texas. It’s a very Texas that k i ll e in Killeen? Sounds like sounds like a like a Texas town from a Western. Yeah, Celine. Yeah, no, I didn’t see that kid. Chalene from killing? Like cuddling. Yes, exactly. Happily, it’s about halfway between Austin and Waco, and is the home of Fort Hood. That’s I mean,
Kelli 1:54
what I hear you say that is killing. But we’ll leave that analogy for a different day. And just say welcome Killeen.
Chris 2:03
Welcome, Kelly. And all it’s probably, you know, military folks. Fort Hood. Right. Decided to listen to our podcast. Yeah. Lancaster, South Carolina. Lancaster, my hometown. That’s what it’s known for. It’s not It’s known for other things, but Lancaster, South Carolina. Welcome to my hometown listening to our podcast. I can’t believe it’s the first time ever welcome, Lancaster. Sparta New Jersey. 20,000 fine folks in Sparta New Jersey, just northwest of New York City. In
Kelli 2:35
their spot in Georgia.
Chris 2:36
I’m pretty sure Yeah. Okay. Probably because there’s an Athens. Right,
Kelli 2:40
right. I feel like there’s a Sparta in Georgia.
Chris 2:44
Okay, but this is the one in New Jersey
Kelli 2:46
right now. No, we
Chris 2:47
love them, too. We’re not the ones in Georgia do Yeah. And I just like to say the name of this next town. Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada.
Kelli 2:55
Saskatchewan. Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
Chris 2:59
Just exactly like you said that Saskatoon. feel like you’ve been to the alpha center, he would say, that’s fun to say.
Kelli 3:07
That’s fine to say. Francisco and Saskatoon. Rancis. Go. Alright,
Chris 3:14
let’s go to Main Street. Okay. So we’ve got some Santa meet and greets that have launched at the Disney parks in Florida, at least the Odyssey pavilion over there on the water on the Mexico side of things, okay. They have dressed up for Santa and you can go there and meet Santa. I believe as of tomorrow, maybe today but tomorrow for sure.
Kelli 3:41
Okay. I mean, I feel like he should have arrived when the Macy’s Santa arrived was on Thanksgiving Day.
Chris 3:50
He had a little do a little traveling. What’s what’s going to be amazing is the fact that you can also meet Santa over the magic
Kelli 3:58
Well, I mean, Santa really does have his magical I mean he’s got time travel down he can be in multiple places. It was so
Chris 4:06
interesting to talk about time travel no concern at all. Yeah, absolutely. So yeah, go you want to meet Santa and do Disney at the same time. You can’t do it. You can just go to the Magic Kingdom go to Epcot, you can do both. No holiday remix the Guardians of the Galaxy cosmic rewind ride this year. Remember last year they did the holiday remixed music
Kelli 4:30
why Bahama?
Chris 4:33
I don’t know why they decided to be hum humbug this year was very humbug ish. But that’s the we’re just going with the regular awesome mix. Okay. This year interest during the holidays. Yes. Okay, that’s
Kelli 4:47
interesting choice.
Chris 4:48
Yep. Also the they launched this weekend. The Disney wish I’m a star show on And Spaceship Earth. So you know they Okay, right? Right the beacons of magic. Yes, that’s cool beacons. What
Kelli 5:06
are they called? beacons of light to beacons. Yeah, beacons of light on on
Chris 5:10
spaceship Earth, they create the shows. Right. And they created one for the new movie that has come out. Right. I’ve heard I’ve heard there’s a new movie that has come out. So I’m sure that that shows beautiful.
Kelli 5:24
I’m sure it is.
Chris 5:26
The boardwalk gingerbread house debuted last week, with 100 hidden Mickey’s in it. Wow, some some very easy, and some not so easy. Now, I would
Kelli 5:40
buy that for the grand flow. And this is about gingerbread house is not as
Chris 5:44
big as is not like the Grand flow. No, that’s what I’m saying. It’s big. It’s a big gingerbread house. But I mean, it’s not. It’s a display. That’s what I’m saying. It’s not an actual building. It’s
Kelli 5:56
not it’s not eaten. They don’t sell parts of it. You know, like they do at the Grand flow. Or sell things out of it. Right? Yeah, people don’t stand in it. So 100 hidden Mickey’s 100
Chris 6:08
hidden Mickey’s in this thing? Pretty solid. D solid. Hey, what are you doing for New Years?
Kelli 6:19
Probably kissing you at midnight? Oh
Chris 6:21
my word. Yeah, that’s, that’s a that’s a given that we wherever we are. We’ve got some some people that we love to do a podcast, Disney assembled. Ghosts go listen to their podcasts. They are absolutely adorable. We love them. Love them so much. There’s a chance outside chance. We’re hypothetically speaking. I don’t want to give too much away. They might be at the in the Disney vicinity. During the New Year’s had they confirmed this? Or they? I don’t know if they’ve confirmed Yeah, they’re just just using their own language so far. They were looking for ideas of things to do on the years and I think that something has popped up here that they might want to consider. Oh, what is it for just $800
Kelli 7:10
Oh my goodness.
Chris 7:11
I think that’s a person. You can enjoy the Alice in Wonderland themed New Year’s Eve party at the California grill of atop the contemporary resort
Kelli 7:21
be a lot of fun. So much $100 $100 They gonna feed it to me and then wipe my chin afterwards and tuck me in bed.
Chris 7:36
Oh, I don’t know. I did read the article about what all man that is. That’s pricey, man. Yeah, no. No, it’s not a joke.
Kelli 7:47
$800
Chris 7:51
you do get I mean, the food looks crazy delicious. It is next level food. You you are you know, you’re hanging out with the Mad Hatter in the in the March hair and all the crowd but it’s still a lot of money for that thing. You know? I mean, it’s a beautiful view the fireworks, you know, you know, but yeah, that’s not I don’t think we run in that crowd. Do you? What do you think?
Kelli 8:18
Not in the $800 crowd? We most certainly do not. We most certainly do not run in the $800 a person crowd for New Year’s Eve event. Do not we don’t run in that crowd. No, that is not our crowd. The
Chris 8:31
exterior painting has started for the new Disney Vacation Club tower at Polynesian. I am so excited about this thing. I’m pretty excited. No, there’s rigging in saying
Kelli 8:40
it really before most right because we’re members there. And so I was excited about it.
Chris 8:46
I would. Yeah. I mean, I’m Yes, that’s right. And I’m excited. I don’t I have absolutely no negative feelings at all about the fact that it’s 10 storeys tall or whatever. There’s all sorts of negative does Twitter, you know, stuff out there, whatever. This is spoiling something somehow, but I’m really excited about it.
Kelli 9:04
I think a 10 story building is spelt spoiling something I don’t know. What about Coronado Springs? Or
Chris 9:11
I mean grand flows not quite that tall. But it’s not exactly two stories. I’m saying they’re contemporary. Yeah, they like tower it’s just
Kelli 9:19
looking to complain. Well, that’s what does Twitter. Gotta get off Twitter completely. You
Chris 9:24
are going to want with this next story. You’re gonna want to book a flight tomorrow to Anaheim. Okay, ready? Are you sitting down? Let’s have it. The first ever holiday themed rum barrel Tiki mug. I
Kelli 9:41
saw that I saw that and I was like, if Chris doesn’t mention it, bringing this up. They have you can only get it through mobile order starting at 6am. So you’ve done the reason I’ve done the research mobile order starting at 6am Mobile order only 6am Okay, so you can mobile orders to be picked up between 7am am to 3pm now this place doesn’t even open until four so they’re they’re getting rid of these mugs wait for the place even opens like if you’re going in for a drink and you think you’re gonna drink it in the wrong no no hard no you’re not no it’s not gonna happen you need to be at Disneyland on property ready to place that order at 6601 you light you are late place that order at six and you might get you might get like a 230 pickup time. That’d be ready that’d be flagged. Ready? Be flexible give up your whole day for this now
Chris 10:32
are you committed or was that something you do?
Kelli 10:34
I would you totally would totally 100% 1,000% Would Did you see the picture? I did. It’s red and white has little wreath on the door it’s so bad but I don’t want it bad enough to pay what it’s going to be sold for on eBay because those things are going to be sold for just slightly under the price of gold. And I just I can’t but
Chris 10:58
I know I know we’ve got like seven years seems pretty soon we’ll be close to like having a whole set of those rum barrel mugs. And what if what if that completed the set oh gosh
Kelli 11:11
I don’t even know it’s to maximum two per person. So we would love that to go through and get to just to have a full set to a maximum
Chris 11:24
I was thinking we I think we’ve got three rum barrels now we could have this one as the four No
Kelli 11:29
no no no that’s not how it works no you we would need for Christmas it’d be like the Christmas China
Chris 11:37
would be it would be the Bali household version of Christmas China would totally be what we would
Kelli 11:43
ever come to China I would treat could
Chris 11:46
you get the could you get the Christmas China out to be writer sans Tiki mugs.
Kelli 11:52
Oh my god.
Chris 11:53
That’s awesome. I
Kelli 11:54
would love it.
Chris 11:55
I knew I knew that that would be you would be excited about I didn’t know you’d already done all the research done
Kelli 11:59
all the research. I did all the research all of it. I did it all.
Chris 12:03
So I saw this on a couple things from Scott guests and on his Twitter feed. Tim Allen confirmed what apparently Iger previously hinted at that Disney has already reached out to both he and Tom Hanks about reprising their roles in a Toy Story five
Kelli 12:19
oh just
Chris 12:24
so strange.
Kelli 12:25
I mean, I think Disney gets a lot of grief over like not creating something new. And I think when you announce frozen three and four the week before you announce Toy Story five you really sort of play into those things. But whatever like you do you
Chris 12:43
well I mean they did build a Toy Story land and they’re building froze world of frozen all over
Kelli 12:47
the world. Whatever. Whatever like you do you frozen three and four prop up properly storing five. Anymore toys can we lose?
Chris 13:00
Oh, never be said that. You don’t have opinions about anything. Let’s see what you got to say about this. Dave Filoni has been named Chief Creative Officer for Lucasfilm, according to Vanity Fair. Got some sense about that? No. I know you This is Star Wars, so I was felt pretty safe earlier. Yes, absolutely. This is the right move. Dave Filoni is the man and I can’t believe he didn’t already feel this spot, frankly. Okay, so good for you, Dave. I cannot wait to see what is to come in the Star Wars canon. Yeah, no, you’re fired up about it. All right. You ready to go your tomorrow? already?
Kelli 13:44
So I realized that this movie came out like last week or the week before or something like that, like school plays? Like I saw it officially just a couple days. Okay, I saw all over the instance. But you and I haven’t seen it yet. Not yet. So it still technically fits into Tomorrowland. So I’m going to talk about what we need to know about the wish movie, okay, because I didn’t really know like the plot, all right, or whatever. So I’m gonna give you give you some backstory. I’m
Chris 14:06
excited because I don’t really know myself. Yeah. Chris pines in it. Okay,
Kelli 14:09
good. So it’s intended to be a visual celebration of Disney’s 100 year anniversary. Okay, so it’s meant to bring all the fields and tons of nostalgia easter eggs galore,
Chris 14:21
who are like Easter, I
Kelli 14:22
knew you would, I knew you would be down for that. Now. The music is described as glossy pop. And like, I don’t really know what that means. But, but some people specifically you know, they released Chris pines villain song before the movie came out. And it kind of got a lot of hate online and people described it as being as having like somebody had asked chat GPT to write a song in the style of Lin Manuel Miranda.
Chris 14:57
Although you could do worse
Kelli 14:58
you could do worse, but I completely get where they’re coming from on that. Now it has 50% on Rotten Tomatoes, and an 81% audience score. I feel like they shouldn’t have released the villain song as the song before the movie. I think that sets the wrong expectations about an 81% audience score that yeah, I’m gonna give you some some reference points. It’s not good. But so I felt like they should have released a different song to lead into it something by ASHA, for example, the star Chris Pine, maybe not the best singer in the world. And he just got a lot of hate for that song. And so I think it sets it sets a perception and an expectation and people go in and they’re like me, okay, so just a reference point frozen got 90% on Rotten Tomatoes and an 85% audience score in Kanto. 92% on Rotten Tomatoes at 93% Audience score, cocoa 97 on Rotten Tomatoes, 94% audience score and marijuana 95% on Rotten Tomatoes and 89% Audience score. So just sort of putting it in a group with its peers, it has the lowest audience score, and really the only score by critics that’s below 92 or 90. So so there’s that there’s that Okay, so we’ll just leave it at that. But now I’m going to turn to the plot. Okay, so again, don’t we never believe the negative nancies Oh, we know. I’ve heard good things about the maybe. So People Magazine describes it as after years of telling tales about what happens when characters wish upon a star. Disney is finally exploring how the iconic wishing star came to be in the first place, which I think is cool. And I think that’s a really fun way to set it up. Great. So quick plot. King magnifico and his wife, Queen Amaya. And I’m gonna give you more details specifically on those characters in a second. This is just a quick plot. So King magnifico and his wife Queen Amaya established the kingdom of roses on an island in the Mediterranean Sea. Having studied sorcery, magnifico is able to grant the greatest desires of his subjects. Each of them have to give up a memory of their wish to be sealed and protected by the king until he chooses to grant them once a month in a ceremonial event. magnifico chooses one wish to be granted. So the movie follows Asha. She’s a 17 year old voice by Ariana DeBose, who lives in the magical city of roses. When Asha learns that King magnifico has no intention of granting the vast majority of the wishes. She goes on a mission to free them because remember, he’s holding they had to give up their memories in order to get this potential wish. So
Chris 17:59
they don’t even remember the wish. It’s gone. So
Kelli 18:03
her goal is to free the wishes. During her quest she accidentally summons a magical star named star who helps her along the way. The Kingdom falls under the threat of darkness that no one else except Asha for sees Okay, nobody else sees this veil of darkness this over the kingdom. This is a darkness that is orchestrated by King Magnifico. And so Asha must overcome the evils rising and roses and fight for a better future. So you can see female heroine really got to save roses and all of that. Okay, wish also commemorates the studio’s 100th anniversary, which, which is why the film includes nods in quotes or Easter eggs to Disney classics. Now, I’ve never seen easter eggs used as a verb. And I don’t know how I like that magical perspective, okay, but what they’re saying is it includes you know, nods to Disney classics. So those are all the way through. So for example, Peter Pan is visible in one wish. And ASHA has a friend, one of seven. Who can’t stop sneezing.
Chris 19:17
Oh my goodness.
Kelli 19:18
We’re gonna talk a little bit more about her seven friends. But in any case, let’s talk about the three main characters. The Asha is the main one, we’re going to do her last. So first, let’s start with the villain King Magnifico. He’s king of the kingdom of roses, which is located south of the Iberian Peninsula. Okay, the Iberian Peninsula we were just there include Spain, Portugal and Dora Gibraltar and a tiny bit of France. Okay, so we were in the just barely in the Iberian Peninsula. This kingdom is meant to be a melting pot of cultures, okay, from those on the Iberian Peninsula to North Africa and even people from the Silk Road. All have influences on the cultural aspect of roses now. This says Sounds idyllic, right? It’s a it’s a melting pot of cultures. But what you’re going to end up with here are a lot of ethnically ambiguous people that have nods to specific cultures. So good, bad or ugly. I think Disney is going to get in trouble with some of this. For example, magnifico appears to be ethnically ambiguous. But he’s played by a white guy, Chris Pine. Now Chris Pine I enjoy. He’s the young Kirk from Star Trek, and he’s wonder woman’s love interest. Sure. I enjoy Chris Pine. But he’s as wide as they come. Sure. And you look at magnifico and you’re like, What is he exactly? Not sure why. Yeah, okay. What we know about magnifico is he has vain practices sorcery, and his evil powers are shown in green, like a lot of other villains. So he is definitely the villain of the movie. So maybe his ethnicity as a matter. Queen of Maya, definitely a darker shade of brown than her husband Magnifico. Her name is has like an Arabic descent. His name, of course, has a Hispanic descent. She loves her husband, but she’s not afraid to stand up to him. And she ends up defending Asha in her pursuit of the truth. Now, originally, she was cast as a co villain, but that was changed. Interesting. Asha. Asha is Afro Hispanic, which is the first Afro Hispanic lead in a Disney film, played by Ariana DeBose from Raleigh, North Carolina, no one in Wilmington yesterday, who identifies as Afro Hispanic. She has African American, Italian, Puerto Rican and white ancestry. Oh, wow. She’s the king’s apprentice, and she’s practicing to come to become the future leader slash successor and sorcerer. Okay. There’s no love interest for her, which I’m definitely here for sure. But of course, everybody’s talking about that, because that’s classic Disney. Ariana DeVos says there are more stories to tell other than romance. And I appreciate that, for sure. She says and especially in the world we live in today. I think something like wish that has a broader outlook and talks about community is just as important as talking about love. And there’s so many different ways to love. Duboce is does identify as queer is She has been with her partner Sue since 2017. Okay, so I appreciate that. She said that and that she’s sort of giving a nod to there’s so many different ways to love. She sees this darkness. And so she makes this impassioned plea, her own wish, which is what brings down the star. The star gives Asha a magic wand. And upon taking it Asha gains magical powers of her own sort of becoming a fairy godmother. Oh, interesting, right? She has seven characters who back her up but don’t really do a lot. But they are coded after the seven dwarfs with their colors and personality. Let’s including sneezy. She also has an adorable pet goat that can talk. Now this goat looks like a baby goat. And then when he talks, he’s got like an adult voice. It’s hilarious. You can see it in the trailer. And he’s like, who knew my voice was going to be? Really cool. I’m excited about that goat. Sure. So that’s sort of the gist of the movie. I will tell you, there is a post credits sequence. But apparently it doesn’t have any plot relevance, okay. But they say if you’re into the nostalgia stay, you’ll love it. It gives you all the fields. No plot relevant. Okay. So
Chris 23:40
I feel like maybe then their nostalgia and feels were what was one of the main goals here?
Kelli 23:48
It was 100% One of the main goals and I think they succeeded with that. And yet still creating a new movie with new characters and new plot and all of that new princess to meet all she’s not a princess. She’s an apprentice to the sorcerer. Sure.
Chris 24:03
I mean, in the parks, we got a new a new character, person to me, she’s
Kelli 24:07
very clear that she’s not a princess, just like Mallanna was like I’m not a princess. I’m Dora the chief try like get it right. Not a princess. Okay. So, yes, but a new character to meet in the parks. That is also you know, of color. And I think that’s fantastic, for sure.
Chris 24:21
Scott Gustin, he tweeted out that they went to see her and he said it was wonderful. His family’s Harvard loved it. His five year old has been singing, knowing what I knowing what I know now since they walked out of the theater, which is only one of the songs Good, good, good. So I trust him. Yeah,
Kelli 24:40
I absolutely trust Scott Gustus. And I think I think we’re gonna love it either way. A great problem. We’re probably the audience. Yeah, I’m not worried about loving and I’m, we’re, we’re 100% the target audience for that. Yeah,
Chris 24:51
for sure. Awesome. Well, then let’s make that happen. Let’s do it. Okay, here we go. So You know, this segment might be for just a couple of the people that we know and love dearly that listen to our podcast regularly. And I cannot wait for the next opportunity to literally sit down face to face with these dear friends of ours and have this conversation about the new Doctor Who special episodes. And they know who they are. And so excited about that. But I’m going to start right now. Now, I don’t know we the new episodes started last night. There’s I think there’s three weeks of, of new episodes. And then and then we get our new doctor who
Kelli 25:38
this is still like the interim doctor. This is this is this
Chris 25:42
is David Tennant. Officially known he’s now he was the 10th doctor. And now he’s the 14th doctor. Interesting, right? He’s not going by not identifying as the 10th doctor. He’s now is the 14th doctor and the new our new doctor will be the
Kelli 25:58
15th He’s the only one to ever do it twice.
Chris 26:01
You know, it gets real fuzzy. But yeah, I think officially he’s he’s for sure. The only one that has been designated with two different rights Doctor numbers. Okay. So just I’m going to talk about my 10 favorite episodes now if you want a doctor who quick explainer, we’ve got another episode on that and we should probably relink that maybe. And and then I think we might do a doctor who special bonus episode where we talk about how you if you are interested, if you are if you are a doctor who are curious doctor, who are curious, we may do a bonus episode where we sort of give our take on what’s the best way to jump in without having to watch all 900 episodes. And I’m not joking. There are over 900 episodes of Doctor here, right? Focused on the modern era starting in 2005. And that’s where I’m going to start with my favorite episodes. Okay, now I was I was going through them today. And I only got up through season seven, which is three Matt Smith. Oh my god, but, but I’m going to run out of time as it is, you
Kelli 27:08
know,
Chris 27:09
I can not even get to Peter Capaldi and Jodie Foster. So just a couple things. I love the ones that have a interesting creative angle. Like you tell of what is a fairly common story but from a from a weird perspective. Completely
Kelli 27:28
Jodie Foster. So I don’t know why you decided to skip over the only woman doctor. I didn’t skip
Chris 27:33
over I just had started chronologically, I even labeled it chronologically ordered. Anytime the bonds between the characters are tested, and their importance for each other wins out in the end, I love those You mean like the companion and the doctor companion and the doctor or the Companions themselves. And things coming full circle, which is so prevalent and Doctor Who a throwaway scene becomes a central element of a later storyline maybe even years later. I love those. Right? So excuse me, as I said chronologically ordered. Here we go. Season One, the very last episode the parting of ways. This is the first time we see your regeneration. This goes from Chris Eccleston, who was the doctor for one season and he becomes David Tennant. And we also get resolution of the bad wolf mystery that was running throughout that entire season. Doctor Who especially in the modern era loves to while each episode is perfectly fine standalone typically, although sometimes they’re one in two parts or three in three part episodes. They will oftentimes have a common thread that runs throughout the entire season. And in this in the first season, it was bad. Well, they kept seeing bad wolf on signs and stuff randomly. We get resolution to that at the very end and it’s hugely gratifying. We also meet Captain Jack Harkness in the first season and it’s that that episode is pivotal to his future in the in the chain.
Kelli 29:11
I love Captain Jack Hart.
Chris 29:13
Of course you named a computer after I did
Kelli 29:16
to never wanted it to die. Okay. need that
Chris 29:19
if you need to know Yes, yes. Okay. 2005 Christmas special The Christmas Invasion. This was technically the very end of season one. This is David Tennant’s first foray fully as Doctor Who. And he spends most of the episode asleep, which is interesting. But once he wakes up and he saves the day, we get to get all that stuff that people love about Doctor Who meeting a new doctor for the first time. The new doctor never knows exactly what they’re going to be like, and we get to watch David Tennant’s character. Learn it Lee literally says I don’t know what kind of man I’m supposed to be. Yep, I do. that part. Yeah, I love that part. Like when they’re sort of learning, they’re learning themselves. And they write down to their wardrobe. Their wardrobe is all speaks specifically to the personality of that doctor. And every time there’s a regeneration, we get to walk that walk with them. And again, Jodie Foster for whatever I know. Yes, she she was fantastic wardrobe. Fantastic wardrobe, we learned that this doctor doesn’t do second chances. That’s what we learned in that episode. David Tennant Okay. Okay. Season two, The Girl in the Fireplace. This is a standalone episode or classic standalone episode. But it gives us huge insight into the personality of the doctor and the doctor, how he views his own history.
Kelli 30:43
But it does so as such as him as one doctor, but other doctors as
Chris 30:47
well, like his full like and what what the really what the life of the doctor is like, it’s solitary, it is lonely. He has companions. But it’s, he knows they’re temporary. Right? Right. And he’s not. And so, but we get to see this journey. There’s a spaceship over Earth that is replacing all of its metal parts with human body parts. And they use portals in their spaceship to get to Earth at different times. And Madame de Pompadour, the French mistress is the is the antagonist the protagonist in this? And she is the one that gives us all this insight into who the doctor is. And it’s, it’s a fascinating way to tell that story. Yep. At the end of that season, we see the army of ghost and doomsday. It’s a two parter. And this is where the Doctor and Rose who are clearly romantically in love at this point, had to say goodbye to each other. And his goodbye speech to her is just the stuff that you know, ugly cries are made of. Yeah. I’m burning up a son just to say goodbye. Oh my gosh, give me a break.
Kelli 31:58
That’s a bit dramatic.
Chris 32:00
But it was it really happened. Season Three. Welcome Martha Jones maybe the most underrated companion of all time you didn’t like her?
Kelli 32:11
I didn’t care for Martha. Oh,
Chris 32:13
she was fantastic human nature and the family of blood again give us huge insight into who doctor who is as a person he literally changed his identity became him and and hid on Earth to keep from punishing his enemies. And it’s what you don’t learn that to the very end of that two parter and it’s it’s such a huge payoff. Blink widely considered the best Doctor Who episode ever and he’s barely in the thing it stars Carey Mulligan before her her Grammy now for her Tony nominations before Oscar nominations. And it introduces the Weeping Angels which is horrifying terrifying. I hate the way you’ll never look at a statue the same again ever ever ever.
Kelli 32:57
The Weeping Angels are just creeped they are so creepy. Yeah, I really really hate the Weeping Angels. They are what nightmares are made of season
Chris 33:07
four. Welcome Donna Noble as the new companion. We get we go to silence in the library and forest is dead. This is the first time that we meet River Song. Of course. Of course, this has also river songs ending but we don’t know that because for the doctor, it’s his beginning, right? It’s very tiny. Why me wibbly wobbly it is. And then at the end of that season, we had stolen Earth and journeys and where Donna Noble becomes Dr. Donna and saves the day. But that’s basically a crossover event with all the spin offs and former companions. They all come together. It’s an amazing and amazing one. Season Five Matt Smith steps in as the doctor I liked Matt’s beloved Matt so loved Matt Smith. If you are looking for a place to jump in, this is a fantastic place the first episode of season five is a clean, clean start with a new doctor clean start with a new companion. They meet each other for the first time and they go off together for the next two and a half seasons or something as each other’s he he’s a stellar doctor, the time of the angels Flesh and Stone. The this is a two parter where they are dealing with the Weeping Angels again, River Song is back. Vincent and the Doctor. This is where Amy and the doctor meet Vincent van Gogh. Oh, that’s one of my favorite is absolutely one of my favorites. Absolutely.
Kelli 34:31
Oh, sorry.
Chris 34:32
It is
Kelli 34:34
heart wrenching. I loved Vince we’ll
Chris 34:36
just we’ll just end my list here because it’s a it’s a good one to end on. And I don’t have enough time to get to the rest of them. But it is so good. It explores what depression must be like for people
Kelli 34:50
feel on a very deep way know
Chris 34:52
Van Gogh suffered that and they give him the opportunity to see what His artwork does to the world. And they and Amy’s like, that’s going to be the thing. He’s not going to do what we know he does, and he does it anyways anyway. And it’s just it is hugely poignant. And this again another wonderful thing about Dr. Who, you’ll see all these amazing actors before and after they became huge Bill Nighy who plays Yeah, right now the guy from Love Actually the guy from Love Actually the rock star from Love Actually he was he played Davy Jones in the pirates movies. He was a museum like tour guide in that episode, he and he wears a bowtie and you know what is what does Matt say Matt Smith’s Doctor say Bow ties are cool Bow ties are cool, right? And so he meets that guy is the guy and at the end they bring Van Gogh in and without him knowing who it is they ask Bill nice character tell us about Van Gogh and then go gets to hear what we believe in today. It’s Oh it’s so good. So you know just go watch that episode just go watch that episode Vincent and the Doctor it’s truly amazing and we’ll do another one of these as a bonus episode where we really get into Doctor Who
Kelli 36:15
I would say if you want to know what Dr Who is about go watch that episode yeah that’s it calls it sort of walks you through like how he travels through time like it’s a really good introduction to time travel and who he is as a human I
Chris 36:29
think you get a I think you even get a it’s bigger on the inside moment like we all we we love those right so yeah,
Kelli 36:35
I would say go for that one.
Chris 36:37
The whole the whole episode is also an allegory to depression and everything and it’s it’s really it’s really quite well that it is really so yeah. All right, folks. That is this week’s episode.
